If I don’t watch at least one film a week, I break. A lot of people know this, and as such I’m seen as a “film guy’ (technical term: Cinéphile). I’m frequently asked to recommend films to friends, family, students, people on social media, and it’s often hard not to just suggest my personal favourites, instead of actually recommending films based on that persons specific tastes or expectations.
To make it easier for all involved, I’ve created a list of ‘500 Films to Watch Before You Die’, that I think everyone willing to take the journey will find rewarding. After the first section – an autobiographical collection of films which have had a huge influence on me and my life – the following sections are divided by how challenging the films will be for audience members to watch. In theory, once you work through the third section, for example, if you still want to dig deeper into the history and outer realms of cinema, then the sections below that will be more unique and challenging (not for the faint of heart). Each list of 100 is based purely on personal taste, and not every film in this list of 500 is a masterpiece, just simply films you should experience at least once.
